These activities are to help students learn to read and spell the most commonly used words in the English language.
In this resource pack there is focus on 62 words that make up on average one half of all reading.
The words have been separated into six groups consisting of 10 - 11 words in each group. They have been separated into groups using different coloured jelly beans - start with the pink and follow with green, orange, purple, blue and yellow.
This pack includes:
- Flash Cards of the 62 words on the coloured jelly beans.
These words need to be learnt by memory as they cannot all be sounded out. Play games with them such as TIC TAC TOE, treasure hunts etc; and flash them to the children to learn by memory.
- 62 X ‘Trace it, Write it, Build it’ Activity Sheets
These activity sheets focus on learning to spell and read the words using a visual and kinesthetic approach. I place the flash cards in the middle of the small group and have the students search for the jelly bean word and then complete the worksheet.
- 62 X Sight Word Phrase and Sentence Cards (with relevant picture to accompany sentence)
These cards consist of phrases and sentences that include each of the words in this pack. They have been separated into the same colours as the jelly beans and the sight word highlighted in its group colour. These cards assist children in providing a bit of context for the words and helps to identify them in a text. These cards are for repeated reading practice and used in conjunction with the flashcards and ‘Trace it, Write it, Build it’ activity sheets.
- 62 X ‘Build a Sentence’ activity sheets
These activity sheets are designed to follow the ‘Sight Word Phrase and Sentence Cards’. Building sentences using these sight words assists students with building on their knowledge of sentence structure and sight word knowledge.
- 6 X Jelly Bean Sight Words ASSESSMENT Sheets
There is an assessment sheet for each set of words.
