Join the Club! Celebrate students learning their sight words by them joining clubs along the way!
I have used this in my classroom for the past three years. It serves as a motivational tool for the students to learn their sight words. When I taught grade one, I introduced 5 words a week and for grade 2 I introduced 10 words a week.
The words are from the Dolch Word Lists. I chose to go by frequency, by grade. Grade one words are up until the end of Club 140 and grade two words are up until the end of Club 180. These are goals you can set for the students to try and achieve by the end of the school year.
The list of all of the words would go home at the start of the new club. Your introduction of the words and the students achieving the clubs will run on two different schedules. Each individual student will get into the clubs at their own rate. It is essential that the students know the goal for their grade, then for themselves. I have had students with a goal of learning their Club 20 words in December, and it is vital that they are encouraged and supported by you, families, and other students. I DO NOT post who is in what Club so that they don’t feel pressure in any way. Keeping things fun and positive are key.
I have included the master list for each Club, the words on individual cards, and certificates for success. At the end of the pack is a certificate if they didn’t get all of the words to encourage them to keep trying.
If you like this pack, please watch for upcoming items. I am working on a morning message pack, home word games pack, and a word study pack, all using these words, in this order.
