Product Description
Fun and engaging ways to practice sight word fluency. This money-saving bundle includes both Sight Word Fluency Pit Stop Practice and Speeding Up Sight Word Fluency Practice Cards. They combine the fast-paced action and speed from stock car racing with sight word practice.

Sight Word Fluency Pit Stop Practice

To complete a pit stop students stand in a designated starting area. On your signal, they run up to one side of the car and change the tires by reading the sight word on the old tire (the tire on the car), removing it, placing a new tire on and reading the sight word on the new tire. They do this for each tire. If they are on the side with the gas can they read the word on the can and place it on the car.

They then pick up new tires for the other side of the car and run around to the other side of the car and change the tires in the same manner as described above. After all four tires have been changed and gas put in the car, they run back to the starting area.

Time each pit stop and record it on the included sheets.

Pit stops can be differentiated by choosing different tires and gas cans for each student or group of students.

Can be used during small group instruction or students can work in groups as a pit crew with one performing the pit stop, one timing the pit stop, and one acting as crew chief and checking to make sure each word is said correctly and all 4 tires and gas were done.

A Pit Stop Notes reflection sheet is included. Much like a crew chief evaluates the pit crew during a race, students will evaluate their own pit stop by writing down the sight words from their stops and color-coding them (green - knew the sight word right away, yellow - a little harder, didn't know the word right away, red - didn't know the word, needed help).

Practice pages are also included (cut and paste activity - students practice putting tires on cars and saying sight words).

The Dolch Sight Words for PreK, Kindergarten, and First Grade are included as well as EDITABLE pages that allow you to add your own sight words.

Speeding Up Sight Word Fluency Practice Cards

Multiple ways to use.

Includes sight word cards for the Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade Dolch Sight Word lists PLUS EDITABLE cards for you to add your own sight words.

Multiple ways to use the cards are included.

Sight Word Speedway - Use the included cards to create a race track. Students "drive" through the track holding the included racing steering wheel and saying the sight words on each card as they go. Time each lap and record it on the included recording sheets.

Head to Head Racing Down the Sight Word Straightaway - In this option, 2 students race each other the length of a table or specified start and finish area. They stand on opposite sides of the table and flip their sight word task cards one at a time, say the sight word, and advance towards the finish. The first student to reach the end wins.

Timed Sight Word Practice - Attach a group of sight words together with a binder ring. Time the student as they flip through the cards and say the sight words. Record their time on the included recording sheet. You can time the students or they can work in pairs and take turns being the “racer” and the timer.

Racing Data Reflection Sheet - Explain to the students that after every race, the team takes time to evaluate their notes & data from the race and reflect on what worked well, what didn’t work well, and how they can improve. It is how they learn and get better. Have students do the same by writing down the sight words from their race and reflecting on how well they know each word by using the color code provided (green - knew the sight word right away, yellow - a little harder, didn't know the word right away, red - didn't know the word, needed help).

Other students can act as racing officials or spotters or crew chiefs and monitor the drivers as they race, help them with words as needed, or time them. They learn to work as a team.
