In 1996, Dr. Edward Fry expanded on the Dolch sight word lists and published the book Fry 1000 Instant Words. His research found that:
*Just 25 words comprise approximately 33% of all written text.
* Just 100 words comprise approximately 50% of all written text.
Many people assume that these 100 high-frequency words are not decodable and that students must rely only on memorization strategies to master these words. However, this is NOT the case!
Here, you can see Fry's first 100 words, color-coded by phonics rules. With these basic phonics skills, you can take this list of 100 words, and cut it down to just 41 words for students to memorize! The remaining 59 words can be read using decoding strategies.
