Product Description
This offering explores character analysis using the acronym F.A.C.T.S. Students analyze characters from the novel, Sign of the Beaver, use a graphic organizer (included) to get started, and complete a Penobscot Indian Vest to display their work. The PowerPoint presentation with related graphic organizer, explains character analysis in detail using the acronym, F.A.C.T.S. This acronym helps students analyze characters through the character’s feelings, actions, character description, thoughts, and words. Specifically, characters in the novel Sign of the Beaver are examined, however, the project can be used for any characters of any trade book or story, by simply changing the color schemes on the PowerPoint, and choosing an alternative way to display the final project. Included in this PowerPoint presentation are:

• Character Analysis explanation using F.A.C.T.S.
• Character traits vs. character emotions
• Positive vs. negative character traits
• Sample character traits
• Character analysis of “Ben”
• Graphic Organizer for F.A.C.T.S. character analysis
• Directions for completing graphic organizers
• Directions for Penobscot Indian Vests
• Completed project samples

After reading Sign of the Beaver, this project is used as a culminating activity, wherein students analyze the characters of Matt and Attean. Using a graphic organizer (included as part of the PowerPoint presentation, and as a separate black and white copy for student use), students cite evidence that support their choices, then transfer that information into paragraph form. Finally, students create a Penobscot Indian Vest to display their work (examples included).

Our students simply loved this project, and while the F.A.C.T.S. acronym is certainly not new, using it for this project made character analysis easy for them to understand, use, and best of all, they were able to apply what they’ve learned through a fun project that makes a great bulletin board or classroom/hallway display.
