Sign of the Beaver is a novel that has been met with some controversy based on its portrayal of the Penobscot tribe and how the book focuses on this time period through the lens of a white boy only. Through this exercise, your student will step into the shoes of other characters and see the story from their perspective.
Throughout Sign of the Beaver, the characters are met with conflict again and again due to their different cultures. Their beliefs have not allowed them to look outside themselves until now. The students grow with these characters by choosing one during select chapters and writing from their perspective. Students can also act out "their" perspective with the another student in a debate-style format for the whole class.
