This Signpost Mini-Unit will help you teach your students to recognize, while reading a text when to pause in order to question, reflect and revise their thinking. The unit includes six lesson plans. You can download two of our FREE close reading posters to go along with these lessons ! Based on the book Notice and Note Strategies for Close Reading by Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst, these lessons will help you explain to your students the six signposts: Contrasts and Contradictions, Aha Moment, Tough Questions, Words of the Wiser, Again and Again and Memory Moment. The unit includes a lesson for each signpost using an excerpt from the following novels:
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros (Signpost: Aha Moment)
Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis (Signpost: Again & Again)
The Year of the Dog by Grace Lin (Signpost: Words of the Wiser)
One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate (Signpost: Tough Questions)
On My Honor by Marion Dane Bauer (Signpost: Contrasts & Contradictions)
Flying Solo by Ralph Fletcher (Signpost: Memory Moment)
Each lesson focuses on one signpost. In each lesson the teacher will read aloud one chapter from the noted novel and discuss the outlined signpost. Students may then choose to go back and continue reading the novel on their own.
