This collaborative learning exercise pairs students up and has them take turns relaying information about celebrities in another language. While this product targets ASL (American Sign Language) acquisition, it is easily adapted to any LOTE (Language other than English) assignment and was designed for Level 1 or Level 2 students. Students describe a celebrity's accomplishments, physical description, why they are famous, their goals, and what their graduating rank in high school was. They get bonus points for guessing the correct celebrity. (An answer key is provided in case you are not "with it".)
One of the other distinct advantages to this product is that it pairs celebrity with examples of academic success. It was originally inspired by a student who was obsessed with 2Chainz, a student who was surprised to discover that he finished second in his high school class. It also presents goals and achievements associated with these celebrities.
This exercise could easily tie into journal assignments about goals, community involvement, civic responsibility, celebrity status, and how we use language to communicate.
