Phonics can be a fun hands-on activity. Practice the "silent e" rule for reading and spelling with these 3-minute board games, also called "folder" games! Playing these reading games repeatedly will help develop fluency and aid in spelling proficiency.
These games are meant to be short activities and played by 2-3 students. These work best with 2 reading buddies because the boards are only 8 x 11 inches, or regular paper size. But kids will have a blast if you give them a game sheet, dice, and 2 small game pieces. A couple of generic boards are included.
The race track boards are lots of fun, too! These boards require starting and finishing in the same spot.
You can also make your own word cards if you choose to use the blank boards. Need to practice a different phonics or spelling rule? Make some of your own, or have the students create their own words for these blank generic boards.
These are just right for literacy stations, to practice phonics, spelling, and decoding words with silent e. Let them go around the tracks a couple of times. They don’t have to be done just because they reached the finish line! These words were selected to help students practice the long vowel sounds found in words ending in e.
All you need is a die!
