Description
Make word study fun! Teach your students to recognize, learn and memorize the spelling patterns in words quickly, easily and fluently with these word sorts. They are also great as a source of vocabulary discussion for words that your students may not be familiar with, especially English Language Learners! Included are ways to make the sorts more challenging for you high-achieving students.
These word study lists come in three variations:
♦ Color picture headers
♦ Black and white picture headers
♦ No picture headers
This way you can choose what works best for you and your students. I use all three in different ways in my classroom.
The black and white copies can be used for Interactive Spelling Notebooks. Students cut, mix up, read, manipulate, glue, highlight and write these words throughout the week. By Friday they are ready for their reading and spelling assessments.
The color copies can be used for small group reading instruction and as a literacy center. Just laminate each page, cut them out and place in a baggie labeled with the sort. The color picture copies work well for ‘Approaching Level’, ‘On Level’ and ‘ELL Level’ groups.
The no picture headers can be used as a challenge for ‘Beyond Level’ or enrichment students.

Word Study Extension Activities
♥For Small Group Instruction♥
The adult leading the group will watch and assess how well they read and recognize the spelling patterns when they are sorting the words, guiding and discussing as needed. Doing repeated practice with a paraprofessional is great practice as the more they practice, the more fluent they become. These are great for parent helpers who like working with students also!
♥For a Literacy Center♥
Students take a baggie and read and sort the words on their own (or with a group). They can also write the words (or write them in sentences) after they have sorted them for added writing practice.
This word study kit includes:
• Silent Letters: -wr, gn, kn, b
