Holding students accountable for their independent reading can be a difficult task. By printing off this bulletin board chart, you will be able to have an easy way to check your students' understanding by using an exit slip type of system. This will not overload your desk with hundreds of papers a week! Students LOVE using post it notes and will enjoy reading with a purpose. By printing off these posters, laminating them, and putting them on a flip chart, you will be able to change their silent reading center in a snap! Students can read different kinds of books and still respond to their reading. Students can respond to fiction, nonfiction, and poetry books.
I personally use this in my classroom as a quick way to keep up with each student. I do not check every sticky note every day! I will pull sticks, ask for volunteers, or just look at certain numbers. This keeps the kids guessing on whether I will check their sticky card or not! This makes students know that they need to complete the reading task for the day. It is very easy to see which student does not complete the task if you make a grid type of poster with the students numbers or names on them. Once the student completes the task, they put their sticky note on their name/number.
