Silent Sustained Reading Guidelines for Pre-AP and AP English description
This is the assignment sheet detailing the guidelines I use for SSR for my Pre-AP sophomore English class.(It can easily be adapted to meet the needs of AP English courses. I have adapted the instructions various teachers have given me over the years to increase the level of rigor for Pre-AP students. Included in the guidelines is a list of novels and works that could appear on the AP Language or the AP Literature tests.
SSR Book Talk Presentation Description
This is an assignment for a book presentation to the whole class. Each grading period my students read a fiction book of their choice (within grade appropriate guidelines). Sometimes students meet with me individually and talk about their book. I call that a book talk. For this assignment, students will present their book to the whole class with a PowerPoint presentation and entertain questions from the class. So instead of a one on one book talk, it is a whole class book talk. This is the instruction sheet for the assignment with an outline students will use as a model.
SSR Weekly Progress Sheet description
This is the form I use to track each student’s progress on SSR days. I pass the forms out to students at the start of SSR class periods and pick them up at the end of each period. I also monitor the students to make sure they are truly reading what they say they are reading.
Here is a link to a PowerPoint I use at the beginning of the year to introduce/reacquaint students with writing their own higher level thinking questions: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Book-to-Brain-Questions-Writing-Higher-Level-Thinking-Questions
