As presented at NCSS Seattle 2012, this activity gives students an experiential understanding of the trade relationships between regions before 1450 and the economic issues that encourage European exploration. In turn, this activity helps students understand why places such as China chose not to engage in exploration. I recommend using this activity in concert with the primary sources and brochure project for the Silk Roads.
