This lab is designed to help students create their own dichotomous key for a set of 10 monsters. The students will assign each monster a name and then record all of its traits in a data table. Next they will use some of those characteristics to divide the monsters into two distinct groups on their lab table. As they continue to divide the groups further into subgroups, they will record this information in a flow chart. The flow chart will then become a dichotomous key. Since the students can actually manipulate the pieces at their table, it helps to make this concept more concrete.
The lab contains full instructions for the students, data table, flow chart, and dichotomous key with analysis questions. There is also a Notes to Teacher section that has some tips and sample data table, flow chart, and dichotomous key.
The lab will work better in color, but could be printed in black and white too if necessary. I recommend printing, cutting, and laminating the monsters ahead of time to get more use out of them.
