Silly Sam loves patterns so much that he takes students on a journey of analyzing various patterns of numbers. This is a great activity to use when you are going to absent or as an introduction to slope. Before you discuss the details of the slope, Silly Sam provides students with an opportunity to count blocks and determine the change in the blocks by creating tables and describing the increase in the table. So when you begin your unit on the slope, students will have a better understanding of what the rate of change means in the context of the problem. You can even refer back to this activity to reinforce the “change in y divided by the change in x”. This activity can be used with even 5th grade students! My students loved Silly Sam!
