I use these worksheets very successfully with my MOST reluctant writers! They love them (especially the boys) as they are fun and all kids like fun. As we all know, kids learn better when they are happy! There are 10 supported worksheets with four sentence starters on each page, so 40 sentences in all.
I get the kids to read the sentence, close their eyes and tell me what comes to mind right away. Some find this easier than others, but it is such a great habit to get into when helping them write. No more blank pages and blank minds! They will come up with all sorts! Children can write independently or be supported by somebody reading them the sentence and then helping them write the finish. Every child will achieve a sentence that they will be pleased with and they will be encouraged to do more. They will learn how to start sentences off in different ways and start to use conjunctions to complete them. They can be encouraged to use adjectives to improve their sentence and identify verbs and adverbs as they write. They can self-check the boxes underneath each sentence to see how many of these they can achieve or the boxes can be used as teacher assessment.
I am really pleased with the results I get using these on my most reluctant writers! Once children have achieved sentence structure they can happily move on to writing more and more.
