Repeated readings are a great way to practice fluency, and these silly sentences make it fun for students to read over and over again! Use the optional punctuation worksheets and cards to help teach students how to use punctuation marks to guide intonation, as well. There are so many uses to this packet! This is a great way for students to practice decoding CVC/CCVCC words I’m context while working on fluency.
Students select a beginning, middle, and end of a sentence to make a Silly Sentence (think, “My red cat sings a song with my grandma’s big toe!”). Students can complete the worksheets independently in the class or for homework. They practice reading their sentences multiple times and with different punctuation marks for different intonations. Additionally, teachers can print and laminate the Silly Sentence cards to use in centers or small group work! Students can physically move around the cards and partner up to see who can make the silliest sentences. Add in the punctuation mark cards to keep more advanced students challenged! Students can take turns reading a sentence with a punctuation mark while their partner guesses which one they used. Giggles are a guarantee in the classroom with this activity!
This sample packet contains 2 worksheets for independent student work (one with punctuation and one without), and 24 Silly Sentence cards (6 beginning, 6 middle, 6 end, and 6 punctuation) to use in centers or in small groups. All the words are CVC/CCVCC words that have regular short vowel sounds.
