I was beginning to want to pull my hair when my students began repeating the SAME words over and over again in their writing and written vocabulary. This activity is fairly quick, a great warm-up, and makes expanding one's vocabulary more entertaining. Students will pick one synonym from a hat (or you can have it taped to the underside of their chairs for a surprise). Pages 8-9 are a list of the "boring" word and then the synonym the student must use in a sentence. They then must use that word to write a sentence about "fill in the blank." I encourage creativity and the students have a great time while growing their vocabulary. Of course we have a share-out session after students have had a chance to write their sentence. This is one example (although I encourage you to look at the preview) Directions – Use the synonym for “funny” that you received to write ONE CREATIVE sentence about boys.
