Here is a fun way to incorporate a lesson on word choice with your students! First, find a nickel, penny, quarter- any familiar coin will do. Next, find a silver dollar coin- these may be a bit more difficult to find but you will need one for the lesson. Now you will present the familiar coin you choose to your students and make the connection that these nickels, pennies, and quarters- we see them all of the time- they don't quite excite us much. You will take out the silver dollar coin and explain that silver dollar coins are much more exciting because they are rare and unique. Words are like coins- in order to keep our readers and audience engaged- we need to make sure we use "silver dollar words" in our writing! Print these mini books on card stock and bind for your students. They can add silver dollar words to these mini books and use them during their writing exploration!
