This Similar Figures Cut & Paste Activity is a great way to keep your students engaged as they reinforce their understanding of similar figures and scale factor!
In this activity, students are required to find pairs of similar figures. They will need to rely on their understanding of proportional relationships and scale factor because the polygons are not drawn to scale! They all look exactly the same although some are rotated. This makes it challenging, but it they persevere, they'll be successful! In addition, they will determine the scale factor for each pair. I generally have the students work with a partner so they can increase their level of understanding through discussion and collaboration.
Prior to using this activity, I give a set of three practice problems (included) to each table of students. I tell them that all three are, in fact, similar figures and ask them how they can prove it! This helps to “refresh their memories” regarding scale factor and proportionality. I find it to be very helpful when introducing this activity!
