This set of guided notes provides students an opportunity to explore and understand similar figures and scale factor. The notes can be glued into interactive notebooks. You will find seven half sheets on the following topics: Similar Figures, Scale Factor, What is the Scale Factor?, Similar Figures and Perimeter, Similar Figures and Area, Using a Scale and How far did you walk? Below you will find a brief description of what is included on each half page of notes.

Similar Figures

✓ Draw two shapes that are enlargements (x3) and (x2)
✓ Draw one congruent shape (x1)
✓ Draw two shapes that are reductions (x.5 and student choice)

Scale Factor 
✓ Scale factor definition
✓ Enlargement, reduction and congruent definition
✓ Draw two new similar figures (scale factor of 1.5 and .75)

What is Scale Factor 
✓ Students understand two scale factors exist. Large to small and Small to large
✓ Draw two new sets of similar figures.

Similar Figures and Perimeter 
✓ Identify scale factor
✓ Comparison of perimeters between two similar figures
✓ Calculate the dimensions of new similar figures given the perimeter
✓ Draw a similar figure given a scale factor of 2.25

✓ Similar Figures and Area
✓ Identify the scale factor
✓ Compare the areas
✓ How may squares would fit inside the other square
✓ Determine the dimensions given the area
✓ Draw a new square given a scale factor of 2.5. Compare the areas

Using a Scale and How Far Did You Walk? 
✓ Using a Scale and How Far Did You Walk?
✓ Given a scale determine missing values of a garden
✓ Compare area and perimeter
✓ Calculate the length on a map or trail when provided a scale
