This engaging activity has students sorting and discussing similar figures, scale factor, and the existing relationship of perimeter and area. Students will sort twenty pieces into four families of five. The pieces can be categorized as follows: rectangle #1, rectangle #2, scale factor applied to rectangle #1, scale factor applied to rectangle #2 and the relationship between the areas. Half sheets of student directions and a summary is included.
This resource can be completed in a variety of ways. One way is to have students cut out the headings and pieces. From there, they can glue down the families in their notebooks. A second different way would be to give students two pieces of paper. One would have all of the pieces and the second piece would be a blank template in which they can glue down the pieces. You might use this if you planned on collecting their sorts.
