This lesson plan is designed to introduce the concept of similes and how they enhance the context of reading and writing. Additional practice is provided through creating a simile to describe a familiar book character.
I have supplied a list of similes that can be edited in order to better fit your lesson needs.
There is a page of simile/non-simile examples for the lesson and I have also included two differentiated student worksheets.
The main goal is for students to understand how similes, like all figurative language, enhance our understanding and enjoyment of literature. Once they begin using it in their writing appropriately, it takes their stories and poems to the next level.
