This power point on similes gives the definition and examples of what similes are with pictures to help students visualize.
On the first slide there is a definition and an example of how similes help our writing become more interesting. The second slide is for you to go over with the class and has three different examples with pictures. Then there are three slides with pictures with text of what the picture is and the students have to try to think of a simile that would go with the picture. The last slide has a definition and another example. You can use this slide to informally assess what your students learned from the lesson.
It is a fun lesson that keeps the whole class engaged. You can also make it into a game to see what group can come up with a simile first or have them act it out for others to guess. Use your imagination and I hope you enjoy.
I also have a Metaphor power point posted that comes after this lesson. It has an informal assessment at the end to that goes over similes, metaphors, and idioms.
