A great activity to reinforce the use of similes and how powerful figures of speech truly are. Allowing the students to tap into their uniqueness as well as their artistic side, this lesson encourages them to think outside the box. They are to compare a facial body part to something creative. Yet, it needs to be something they can find and glue onto the template! Adding adjectives to the items can offer a more creative and complete representation of themselves.
Including a line about "I live in" offers an insight to a hobby or something special about that student.
A great first of year activity. In addition, this project is a fun way to display productive work for parent teacher conferences. Sharing orally encourages a time for bonding within your classroom community.
Two handouts are provided for the students: one of the poem and the second of a facial template. A rubric is provided for you to give feedback. Students can also self-check by marking the boxes as they prepare their work for submission.
