This is a simple "Simile or Not a Simile" sort. Students sort 10 sentences into two columns to identify if they contain a simile or not. I've tried to address common misconceptions that my students have had with the "not" side (especially how every phrase with "like" or "as" must be a simile because it contains those words!).
When students are done, they add their own similes and non-similes to the list (which is a fun challenge for students who like to stump each other).
Directions: I usually do this in partner pairs, so I run off one copy for each pair. I cut apart the page with the sentences, and discard the extra heading strips. Each group of strips is paper clipped together, and distributed with the sorting mat page.
