Understanding the art of creating similes has never been more engaging and entertaining then when you introduce your students to this writing activity "My Family Is As..."
Using the mentor text "My Dog Is As Smelly As Dirty Socks" by Hannah Piven as inspiration, your students will create their own simile story using their family as the subject matter. Your students will be challenged to come up with creative similes to describe their family members as well as themselves.
Included in this packet is a blank cover page for the students to create their cover, a blank story page on which to write their story, a student sample and two teacher samples in which to inspire your students on how to begin. Also included are two example titles of mentor text that can be used.
I use this with my class every year with great results. Once my students understand what a simile is, I hand out the cover page first for them to come up with their own titles and illustrations. Next, we take one page at a time to describe their family and create an illustration to accompany the writing. Some students will have a four page story, others will have six or seven pages, depending on how many family members they include. I have my students include themselves at the very end of the story.
