Get your students thinking abstractly about their argument topic by having them create a simile or a metaphor to describe it. Adding a simile or a metaphor to argument writing takes their writing to the next level. This worksheet helps simplify this abstract process.
How I use this tool in my classroom:
I use this in conjunction with argument writing. Before this lesson, my students have already learned about similes and metaphors.
After my students have written the first draft of their argument essay, we take a day to come up with similes and metaphors that they can add to their essay. Creating similes and metaphors about their argument topic is not easy for them. We go through the worksheet together and we create examples of a class topic, and then I let them work through it on their own.
