Similes are one type of figurative language from the Common Core State Standards 3.RL.4, 4.L.5, 5.RL.4, and 5.L.5. After students have been introduced to similes, making a class book is a great way to extend what they’ve learned.
Each printable page has a familiar simile plus the meaning, such as "It's as easy as pie/It's easy to do." Most of the similes are also idioms. The children will draw a silly picture of the literal simile, then a picture of the meaning. There are 15 “AS_AS” and 15 “LIKE” similes for a total of 30 to choose from. A book cover in color or black + white is included, plus a Blank Template to add even more similes. Download the Preview for more information plus a sample page to try.
Great for ESL students, since figures of speech can be so perplexing for non-native speakers. This blog post has more ideas for using these simile printables.
