Beginning in third grade students must be able to demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships and nuances in word meanings and distinguish the literal and nonliteral meanings of words and phrases in context in accordance with the common core standards. In fourth grade students must explain the meaning of simple similes and metaphors in context. In fifth grade students must be able to interpret figurative language, including similes and metaphors, in context. It is in these grades students build a solid foundation and understanding of figurative language to use throughout middle school and high school.
I designed the activities in this packet to teach students two types of figurative language: similes and metaphors. This product will allow students to practice identifying and writing similes and metaphors in a fun way…with music!
You can print a packet for each child or each page individually. I’ve provided youtube links to each song on the next page so your students can listen to each song as well as read the lyrics. These pages could be used whole group, at a center or individually.
