This activity is designed for students to explore the steps for solving a linear equation.
It was developed as an opening lesson for solving equations in Algebra 1. It can be used as a review for 8th grade or it might be more appropriate for struggling 9th graders. The knowledge of how a balance works and the study of integers will help with this activity.
The teacher is Simon and students follow steps with their (different from the teachers) equation as they see their teacher solve her/his equation.
A.REI.1 Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the equality of numbers asserted at the previous step, starting from the assumption that the original equation has a solution. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method.
