The big take home message for me after reading from Emma’s book is that I don’t have to be perfect. If only I’d had access to this in my first year of teaching I would have realised that trying my best was good enough!

Many of Emma’s tips and trick are ones I have learned steadily over my career. The course theory from the PGDE did not prepare me for the reality of the classroom at all, however the way the book is written provides a no nonsense guide to making the most of the things that really do matter when setting up a classroom and preparing for your first weeks of teaching.

I would apply the tips in this guide to setting up a classroom even now after several years of teaching.
