I used this lab to reteach convection currents as I had already covered the water cycle, local & global winds, and was introducing ocean currents. It can be used in different ways. I'm finding that some of us need more visuals to help in the understanding of concepts that are not always obviously visible. There are few materials needed. It's simply dark colored ice cubes that are dropped into one side of a beaker of water with red warm dye on the other side. The cool dense water sinks to the bottom while the warm dye hangs at the top. I have them draw their observations using colored pencils. There are questions helping to link convection cycles to the content. THERE IS A KEY WITH ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS TO SAVE TIME! I hope this helps.
