Help! What are Simple Machines?
This is an inquiry lesson designed to get the students thinking and collaborating together.
I'm always looking for ways to start a unit in a true inquiry fashion. When I told the kids that the principal had a present for me, but I couldn't get it until I learned a few things they were instantly inspired to help out. Now, they can't stop thinking about how to solve the problem. At the beginning of the lesson they had never heard of the 6 Simple Machines and by the end of the lesson they knew each one and could tell me how they worked. They activated their own schema, added onto each other's thinking and learned by doing.
