This activity will challenge your students to categorize the 6 simple machines: inclined plane, lever, wedge, screw, pulley, and wheel and axle. My 8th grade students have a lot of fun with this hands-on activity & I hope your students will too. :)

This was perfect during my Rube Goldberg unit with my gifted students. I used it as inquiry sort; the students were given no category headings and had to look for common characteristics to sort them into categories of their own choosing. Some groups were able to figure out that they were all simple machines, others needed more guidance.
