This resource can be used for any teacher teaching or reviewing simple machines - but was created with the Understanding Structures and Mechanisms: Movement (Ontario Grade 2 Science) curriculum in mind.

In the flipbooks, students will:

LEVER
- write the word "lever" on primary printing lines
- define what a lever is
- read what a lever is and how it works
- identify the fulcrum in 5 everyday examples of levers
- draw, cut and paste, and/or list examples of levers
- use inquiry to example how one can use less force to move a load

WHEEL AND AXLE
- write the words "wheel and axle" on primary printing lines
- define what a wheel and axle is
- read what a wheel and axle is and how it works
- draw, cut and paste, and/or list examples of screws
- identify wheel and axles not used for transportation
- design a wheel and axle system to move a heavy object

WEDGE
- write the word "wedge" on primary printing lines
- define what a wedge is
- read what a wedge is and how it works
- draw, cut and paste, and/or list examples of screws
- read/do an experiment to observe its mechanical advantage
- write what some example wedges split

SCREW
- write the word "screw" on primary printing lines
- define what a screw is
- read what a screw is and how it works
- find screws used as fasteners in their environment
- draw, cut and paste, and/or list examples of screws
- read/do an experiment to use a screw to move liquid

INCLINED PLANE
- write the word "inclined plane" on primary printing lines
- define what an inclined plane is
- read what an inclined plane is and how it works
- draw, cut and paste, and/or list examples of inclined planes
- conduct an experiment to observe force when moving up
- conduct an experiment to observe force when moving down

PULLEY
- write the word "pulley" on primary printing lines
- define what a pulley is
- read what a pulley is and how it works
- draw, cut and paste, and/or list examples of pulleys
- choose a picture and explain how pulleys are used in the object
- design a pulley system
