***Editable*** I designed this guided notes and practice activities resource with middle school and high school Beginner ESL students in mind because I often find resources that are appropriate for my students' language levels, but not their age levels. My goal is to create ESL materials that are appropriate for both.
I made this resource editable so that you can change the names of the students, countries, languages, and school to better represent your classroom demographics. I have found that incorporating students' names, cultural backgrounds, and personal lives into grammar exercises helps to increase student engagement.
This resource follows the method of grammar instruction imparted to me by a mentor. I have found this method of grammar instruction to be both engaging and highly successful with students in the classroom. The method of grammar instruction upon which I created this resource is as follows:
1. Explicit Instruction
- Easy-to follow guided notes on the uses and forms of regular and irregular simple present tense verbs
- Two fun and engaging listening activities that utilize songs and their lyrics to help students identify proper forms of simple present tense verbs
-Simple present tense error identification worksheet
-Two double-sided bell work/exit ticket worksheets
-Four practice worksheets that require students to produce simple present tense verbs in different contexts. These practice worksheets reinforce knowledge and skills acquired in the explicit instruction and identification sections of this resource. They can be used as an in-class assignment or for homework.
In addition to the activities, I also include a Teacher Tips section to assist you in implementing this resource in your classroom.
