Students locate the verb(s) and subjects in sentences first then determine if it is a complete thought. Next, students define an independent clause (has a subject, verb, and is a complete thought). From there, students learn that a simple sentence contains one independent clause. After that, students practice writing simple sentences.
I use these pages with 4th graders, but it can be used for all upper elementary grades.
