Supplement for Reading Street Common Core Grade 1, Unit 2
Building Reading Fluency with Simple Sentences, High-Frequency Words
This easy-to-use game was designed to help students practice reading simple sentences containing the high-frequency words found in Unit 2 of the first grade Reading Street (2013) series.
This game may be used with any reading series.
The high-frequency words used in this game are:
Game 1- catch, good, no, put, said, want
Game 2- be, could, horse, of, old, paper
Game 3- live, out, people, who, work, like
Game 4- down, inside, now, there, together, home
Game 5- around, find, food, grow, under, water
Game 6- also, family, new, other, some, their
Play is simple…
Needed: 2 different colored crayons (1 per person), 1 die, and 1 game board
Directions: Players take turns. Player 1 rolls a die and reads the corresponding word. The player then finds that word in a sentence and reads the sentence aloud. If the sentence is read correctly, the player colors it. (If there are no available sentences for that word, the player loses his/her turn.) If the sentence is read incorrectly, the player s turn is over. Play continues in the same manner until all the sentences are colored. The player with the most colored sentences, wins the game!
My students love these games! I have found that this game has quickly become a class favorite, especially for my kiddos who are struggling with reading. They are so thrilled when they can read the sentences!
