Supplement for Reading Street Common Core Grade 1, Unit 3
Building Reading Fluency with Simple Sentences, High-Frequency Words
This easy-to-use game was designed to help students practice reading simple sentences containing the high-frequency words found in Unit 3 of the first grade Reading Street (2013) series.
This game may be used with any reading series. The high-frequency words used in this game are:
Game 1- always, become, everything, nothing, stays, things
Game 2- enough, own, every, any, sure, were
Game 3- away, friends, house, our, school, very
Game 4- afraid, again, few, how, read, soon
Game 5- done, know, push, visit, wait, ever
Game 6- before, does, good-bye, oh, right, won’t
Play is simple…
Needed: 2 different colored crayons (1 per person), 1 die, and 1 game board
Directions: Players take turns. Player 1 rolls a die and reads the corresponding word. The player then finds that word in a sentence and reads the sentence aloud. If the sentence is read correctly, the player colors it. (If there are no available sentences for that word, the player loses his/her turn.) If the sentence is read incorrectly, the player s turn is over. Play continues in the same manner until all the sentences are colored. The player with the most colored sentences, wins the game!
My students love these games! I have found that this game has quickly become a class favorite, especially for my kiddos who are struggling with reading. They are so thrilled when they can read the sentences!
