In this activity/worksheet, students solve SIMPLE substitution problems and color based on the answers. This reveals a "hidden message" when the work is done correctly.
These are SIMPLE because all of the numbers are integers and the solutions are also integers. This does not meet the grade level standard of systems with rational numbers, but it is an ideal page as an introduction, a review, or an activity for a substitute teacher. :)
Each of the problems is a set of equations in y=mx+b form. A simple substitution will allow them to become one-variable equations that are easily solved in about 3 steps. This is often called "Equal Values Method" of substitution.
As the students solve the system and obtain an ordered pair, they find the square in the grid above with their answer. They they shade the squares to match those next to the problem revealing a final message of "WAY TO GO!!"
This is a great self-checking assignment to do as a review, while a teacher is working with a small group, or when you have a sub.
