Bigfoot, the tooth fairy, the abominable snowman, aliens, leprechauns, unicorns, the Easter Bunny, and many more are the theme for engaging your students to learn about simple and compound sentences.
You get three anchor charts/handouts (one for simple sentences, one for compound sentences, and one for coordinating conjunctions). You also get three practice pages of combining simple sentences to form compound sentences, a card sort of 24 cards that should be sorted according to simple sentence, compound sentence or sentence fragment. In addition you get an activity where students are presented with one independent clause (simple sentence), and must choose a conjunction to add their own additional independent clause to make a compound sentence. Finally, there is a mystery picture where students will shade in the boxes containing compound sentences to find the mystery picture. This is great center work! Engaging and common core aligned.
