Get students out of their seats and engaged in simplifying algebraic expressions using distributive property and combining like terms. This is a more advanced activity that includes rational numbers and longer expressions making it great as a beginning of year refresher or end of year review.
Post the cards around the room and have student rotate to each “station” to solve one problem and write the clue word on their paper. Students can work in whatever order they want, so it is easy to spread them out across the room. Each card is numbered in the upper left star. Posting one or two of the cards in unusual places also adds to the excitement as they search for the hidden station.
Two versions of the activity are included to help make printing easier for you. The first has a color background along with the color stars and boxes. The second has a plain white background with the color stars and boxes. If “no color” ink is needed, just print the second set in grayscale or pure black & white. Half sheet student answer sheets are also included to help save on paper and copying costs.
Printing each question on cardstock and laminating each will keep copy costs down and preserve the activity for years to come. Using color cardstock keeps printing costs down while adding a visual appeal for students. I hope you and your students enjoy this activity as much as mine do!
