This is an activity that promotes student-to-student discourse. It can be used a guided math "station."
Three students will be given a set of “Simplifying Equivalent Expressions” cards. Divide the cards so that each student has a red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink card. Even though the expressions on the cards are different, the answers on all three red cards, all three orange cards, all three yellow cards (and so on) will be the same.
Starting with the same-colored card, students will simplify the rational expression on his/her card, and then compare his/her answer with partners’ answers. If they get the same answer, then the three students can move on to the next card. If the three students get different answers, then they will work together to find the error and correct it. Each student will complete the “Matching Equivalent Expressions Activity” handout.
