This is an awesome mini book for any interactive math journal. Combining like terms and simplifying expressions with variables is unusually difficult for students. This mini book will simplify the process and ensure that they are variable professionals in no time at all.
This mini book breaks this complicated process down into 5 progressive steps. It is excellent to review as each page builds on the page before by adding one additional skill to the expression. Students will also have the opportunity to cut apart and manipulate the actual expressions so that they can physically move them around to combine like terms. Thus, they will better understand how to do it with just paper and pencil. Color coding is also used on every page to help students keep things separated and organized on their papers and in their minds.
Each page starts with a scaffolded note paragraph to remind them or important rules for that page, and then ends with an example and opportunity for practice.
The Five Progressively Difficult Pages Are:
1. Expressions with Only Adding and Subtracting
2. Expressions with only Multiplication
3. Expressions with adding, subtracting, and multiplying.
4. Expressions with the distributive property.
5. Putting it all together
