This activity includes a set of 20 cards for matching, a recording sheet to show work, and a flow map to demonstrate the steps for simplifying algebraic fractions.
This activity is designed to have students simplify algebraic expressions (monomial quotients or rational expressions with monomials only). Only basic factoring (like prime factoring) is required for this activity. The students may be given the entire sheet of cards or the cards may be cut apart and placed in envelopes. I like having the cards separated and in envelopes so that the students first can sort the cards by un-simplified and simplified.
The students may work alone or in pairs. To conduct the activity, the students choose an un-simplified rational expression, show how they simplified it on the organized recording sheet, then make sure there is a matching answer.
The flow map is for illustrating the steps for simplifying.
