This folder activity models a "hot spot" TEI question from the Virginia SOL Tests. The goal of this activity is for students to simplify expressions containing variables and/or the distributive property. This activity will be used in the first unit of Algebra I as review of this topic (precursor to VA SOL A.2), but this is a direct application of VA SOL 7.16.
The activity is set up in a file folder that is laminated for durability and will be exchanged between groups or completed at stations. The students must simplify the expressions and determine which fit the criteria given. There are cards (yes or no) for the students to lay on the problems as they work, and they mark their answers on the answer sheet. In order to conserve paper, I will put several folder activity answer sheets together in one document for students to use throughout the period. This activity could also be modified to use in an interactive notebook or as a classwork activity that students complete individually, where the students could write on the problems.
