This simplifying fractions mini-book was made for my fifth grade students as an introduction day activity to simplifying fractions. The students are introduced to important vocabulary (simplify, reduce, GCF, etc.)
The students will be guided through the steps of making factors charts to find all of the factors for the numerator and denominator. The book explains how to order factors and divide to find simplest form.
Students are also prompted to "prove" their answers by checking their work with fraction pieces; these are nice hands-on breaks for the students.
At the end, students learn about fractions that can be simplified to 1/2. They have to circle all of the fractions that can be simplified to 1/2. This mini-book is a great alternative to traditional notes or learning from a textbook. I have my students glue down the last page of the mini-book into their math notebooks.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Cut the pages in half and staple the ends together to create a fun, interactive booklet.
