Objective: This is an activity to help students understand simplifying radical expressions. Students should be able to simplify square roots, cube roots, and be able to rationalize the denominator when taking square roots of fractions. Students enjoy relaxing and coloring the picture after they have discovered the correct answer! Who wouldn’t love adding some color to a soaring bird of the tropics? This is a great puzzle activity for individual students or groups of students!
Instructions: After each student receives an activity sheet, explain that they will be coloring the picture of the bird—but there is a catch! Each part of the picture must be a specific color, and each student can discover what color it should be by solving the math problem located in that portion of the picture! Each answer is located at the bottom of the picture along with the color for that area; a helpful hint: each box will only be used once, and when you are finished there should be no answers remaining! So if a student can’t find their answer below, they might want to go back and check their work to see if they made a mistake.
