Students work in partners to simplify rational expressions in this collaborative "Around the Clock" activity. Each partner gets a clock with 12 unique rational expressions to simplify and an answer sheet. Each partner's clock problems are different but the answers are the same, encouraging collaboration and teamwork. If one student gets stuck, the other can help. If student answers differ, they work together to figure out the correct answer before moving on to the next problem.
Students paste their START slip at 12 o'clock, simplify its rational expression and find the simplified version on the top of another slip. They then paste this next slip at 1 o'clock and simplify its rational. Each answer students find will lead to the next rational to simplify.
Students simplify all 12 rational expressions until they get back to 12 o'clock. If all rationals have been simplified correctly, the simplified version of the rational at 11 o'clock will be found at the top of their START slip.
*All expressions require factoring to solve. All A values are either 1 or the GCF.
**Please note that restrictions have been omitted for student answers to match. On the student answer sheets is a statement explaining this and the importance of restrictions.
The activity is self-checking, providing students with instant feedback. The final product is a colorful example of their ability to simplify rational expressions. Includes student answer sheets and answer key.
